Transitions Tidbits - Sixth Grade

Sixth Grade Transitions

Basics – Some things you probably know, but might not recall.
  •  Most sixth graders are beginning to explore who they are as individuals, yet they worry about fitting in.
  •  Young middle school students have an amazing opportunity to explore new talents and skills, but they are often afraid to try new things.
  • Tweens and teens are presented with non-biblical worldviews from many sources including media and school, and they are searching for ways to make sense of it all.
Beyond Basics - A few items that might surprise you.
  • The #1 stressor for new sixth graders is their locker.
  • Young teens still value and seek their parents’ approval.
  • Teens need as much love as their younger siblings, even though they don’t know how to ask for it.
  • Middle school students sometimes feel very alone when they lose connections with their elementary friends (even though they may go to the same school), and they are looking for ways to make new friends.
Christianity - Your sixth grader is learning to relate to God in new ways. They are discovering (or are ready to discover) things like:
  • What it means to have an identity in Christ.
  • Not everyone believes the truth about Jesus.
  • God put the Bible together in a fascinating way.
  • Biblical truth can be applied to real life right now.
We're here to help. If you would like to talk with someone about the transitions that you or your child is going through post a comment or send an email to mzimmerman@ualc.org.

Sixth Grade Transitions Email 9/6

As a parent of a 6th grader, you don't need to be told that this is a time of transitions. Whether this is your first, second or tenth child entering a new phase of development, you undoubtedly understand that he or she is going through a lot.

And so are you. Which is why we thought we would gather together some tidbits of information that you might find helpful. (see Transition TidbitsMost importantly, we have found that maintaining a connection to church during the middle school years is very important. Whether through Sunday school, Wednesday night imPact, Carol Choir, a Thursday night Delve group, or Bible study, it is crucial that your child has a safe place where he or she can grow in their relationship with Jesus and with other Christians during this time. We're here to help.

We're here to help. If you would like more information about helping your child get connected please check out the connection points here in this blog, post a comment or email me at mzimmerman@ualc.org and we can talk through some options.

Blessings,

Multi-Cultural Mission at Mill Run

Here's a chance for high school students to make a work with immigrant and refugee kids at Mill Run while their parents are in English class and earn service hours. There are several incredible opportunities to
make a BIG eternal difference in kids’ lives. Adults are needed for the program too.
The program starts Sept 8th. It runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. They understand busy schedules and will work with you to figure out a plan for you and/or your student to help.  See flyer attached for details.

For More Information: Contact Kim Emch, kemch@ualc.org or Pastor Brodie Taphorn, btaphorn@ualc.org.

Youth Team Mission

The Children and Youth Team (staff and volunteers) is dedicated to helping students enter and grow into a more fully developed relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ empowered by the Holy Spirit. We believe this happens through: God’s Word, Prayer Relationships with Christians, Building Bridges of Friendship/Evangelism, Service and Worship.

We present many experiences that provide opportunities for students to grow in all of these areas. Each activity will most likely have multiple components incorporated, but no single program can provide for all of a student’s needs. By connecting in a few different places, a student can more fully grow and develop in his or her faith.
